ShortBlog: SUVs becoming a trend in luxury world?
Not long ago, I read that Lamborghini is planning to build a brand-new SUV called 'Urus' and it should be based on Porsche Cayenne.
But there was always a question: If luxury car companies want to increase sales, why don't they make a compact instead of a big-ol-SUV or just lower their prices of cars?
Lamborghini Urus - a pure monster... |
I am talking about brands such as Bentley, Maserati, Lamborghini and so on. Also Rolls-Royce is also considering to build a luxury SUV, to follow the trend where luxury brands are planning SUVs (to rival companies *cough*Bentley*cough*).
Bentley EXP 9 F - a concept name, but the production model will have different name and well, smaller wheels. |
Maserati Levante - Almost production-ready SUV by Maserati. |
So, why SUVs?
This is my opinion/answer for the question.
The brands that I'm talking about are, as you know, luxury brands and we all know this: Rich people like big and expensive stuff. SUVs proved to be especially popular in Far east in for example Arabia, Dubai and so on. Countries like Dubai and Kuwait have a terrain and climate suitable for SUVs - Sand, deserts, but smooth roads and need protection from sunlight. solution? SUV. So that's why. Luxury brands make cars which are suitable for more richer countries than the overall, worldwide car market. Brands try to luxurize their cars more and make them more exclusive than ever.
And, why not compacts?
Luxury brands - as you know, make large cars, because rich people prefer those.
And plus there is another reason why luxury brands don't make compacts.
One of the biggest failures in motoring history - Aston Martin Cygnet. Just. Awful. A posh Toyota/Scion iQ for $36,000. FAIL |
Perfect example is Aston Martin Cygnet. It has lost the meaning and the purpose as a city car and budget car - it costed 36,000 GBP. And because of that, it was useless.

Compacts are more budget cars rather than luxury cars. Which means, when luxury car brand would make a compact, the 'points' would be lost. Car would not be able to be luxurious, because it would be expensive(luxury brand quality, ...) and the point of luxuty brand would not make sense - brand would lower its standards to reach lower classes of people - that's not a really luxury thing.
So that is why(I think) luxury brands decide to build SUVs, because they are the right choice. However, there is another car class coming for luxury car brands - 4-door coupes. Bentley is planning one already.... Wow, how fast does trend change.
