Cars: Are Turbos Good? Or do they kill the 'classic'?

Since I'm a huge car fan, I always had a question in my mind: Are Turbos good?
You might be saying to yourself "Well of course! They bring up the power, lower the emissions and help the engine to produce more torque!".

This is the turbocharged 1,2 liter which replaces 1,4 liter without turbos.
It has better fuel economy, more torque and is lighter yet more powerful.

Yes, of course, It's true. It is especially true when talking about small, city cars. But as you might have read the title and noticed the word 'classic' and be asking yourself the meaning.
When talking about car noise,
we can't leave Aston's brilliant V12.
I'm talking about the 'classic' pull of the naturally aspirated engines and the no-torque-lag acceleration. And especially, about the SOUND.
For example, if you compare the 911 Turbo to a Gallardo - You notice the difference. In the Turbo, you might feel more torque and the sensation of acceleration of Force-inducted, turbocharged supercar. In Gallardo, you have less torque, but more, well, soul.

Gallardo vs. 911 Turbo.

The soul, the noise which can put a HUGE smile on your face and arouse a 12-year old boy inside every one of you. But then, you look at the papers. You will notice the performance infos. Gallardo lacks horses and torque and has worse fuel economy and emissions adn costs more(is it the price of a soul?). So here you see: Porsche sacrificed the 'soul' and the passion, the noise for performance and power, torque and fuel economy.
And you see, It's  not only my problem if the turbos are good or not. The car makers are leaning towards engine downsizing and adding a turbo or two. Almost every car company is downsizing. But not every company - Brands such as Aston Martin, Ferrari and Lamborghini are not using that method(Phew!). They are the ones, who truly don't give a dang about environment and give the driver a special, no-turbo-lag feel with a LOT of noise. They are the last pioneers and soldiers fighting in this 'BeGreen', 'BeEnvironmentalyFriendly' warfare. They are keeping their code of natural aspiration of their engines.
Naturally aspirated engines seem to be almost historical between all these turbocharged ones. However, the brands that I named earlier are improving their technology and giving a huge effort to improve natural-aspiration technology to be as good as turbocharged one. You can see the effort of Ferrari - recently Ferrari has revealed Ferrari 458 Italia Speziale - More hardcore, track-focused 458 producing 597 horsepower from its Naturally aspirated 4,5 liter V8, which places the engine to have 133 horsepower to ton ratio - the highest ratio of all naturally aspirated engines. The battle between turbocharging and natural aspiration will be very, very interesting indeed...

So, the conclusion? Well, it depends on you, really. If you are a true car enthusiast who can sacrifice fuel consumption for joy of driving and  performance, natural aspiration is the choice (and also it depends on your money - take exotic cars. Most of them, such as Ferrari, Aston Martin are using natural aspiration only). But I'm not saying that
turbos are bad. If you drive your car everyday and need everyday usability then turbo is for you. It's also cheaper to run, has better power figures and wider torque and torque range. So, as I said, it depends on you. It's a matter of your own, personal taste.
Beautiful Ferrari 458 Italia Speziale

3.8 liter, twin-turbo V8 from McLaren MP4-12C which produces
whopping 616 horsepower.
